Assisted Living at Karuna Care London

Karuna Care London is developing an assisted living service that follows a supported living model for adults who need help with daily life but still wish to retain a strong sense of independence and control. The service will be based at our premises in Hayes, West London, where individuals will have their own private accommodation, together with access to support, safety and community when they need it.

Our aim is to provide the kind of environment in which people can live as adults in their own home, rather than feeling as if they live in an institution. Assisted living at Karuna Care London is being designed for those who are able to manage many aspects of their life with support, but benefit from regular assistance, reassurance and the presence of trained staff on site throughout the day and night.

Who we expect to support

Once registration and all approvals are in place, the assisted living service is intended for adults (18 and over) who:

  • Require help with personal care, daily living or managing their health
  • May have learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mild mental health needs
  • Do not require in‑house nursing care or forensic level risk management
  • Prefer a small, stable setting with consistent staff and a homely atmosphere

Each potential resident will be assessed before any placement is agreed, so that we can confirm that the assisted living model is appropriate and that we can safely and realistically meet their needs.

Personalised day to day support

Support will be organised around each individual rather than a rigid task list. Every person will have a written support plan that sets out what they can do independently, what they want to keep doing with light assistance, and what they need more direct help with. This may include:

Personal care

Help with washing, dressing, bathing or showering, toileting and general personal hygiene, always provided in a discreet and respectful way. Support with medication will include prompting or administration in line with GP instructions and the person’s care plan, with clear recording and oversight.

Meals and household tasks

Assistance with planning menus, shopping, preparing meals, and looking after the home environment, including light cleaning and laundry. Residents will be encouraged to participate according to their ability and interest, so that skills are maintained rather than gradually lost.

Errands, appointments and community access

Help arranging and attending appointments, such as GP or hospital visits, and support with everyday tasks like going to the shops, post office or bank. Where needed, staff will accompany residents in the community and provide practical support with transport and communication.

Support will not be one‑size‑fits‑all. Plans will be reviewed regularly, and the level of help increased or reduced as needs change, always in consultation with the resident and, where appropriate, their family or representatives.

Home environment and shared living
Assisted living residents will have their own private, en‑suite rooms, furnished to a high standard and designed to be personalised with their own belongings. The intention is that every person has a secure, comfortable base that feels genuinely like their own space.

Alongside this, residents will have access to shared communal areas, including a lounge for conversation and activities, a dining area, kitchen facilities and a secure garden where they can enjoy fresh air and outdoor time. These shared spaces are being designed to encourage everyday social interaction without pressure, so that people can choose when they wish to be with others and when they prefer some quiet time alone.

The premises has been adapted specifically for this type of service and benefits from relevant planning consent and safety certification, including fire safety, gas and electrical compliance, as part of our wider commitment to safe accommodation for adults who require support.

Social, recreational and community life
A key purpose of assisted living is to reduce isolation. Residents will be encouraged, but never forced, to take part in social and recreational activities that are meaningful to them. Within the home, this is likely to include small group activities, shared mealtimes, themed events and celebrations that reflect residents’ cultures, interests and faiths.

There will also be opportunities, where appropriate, to access the local community, for example visiting nearby parks, shops, places of worship or community venues. The emphasis will be on ordinary, achievable activities that feel natural rather than forced. Family members and friends will be welcome to visit and, with the resident’s agreement, to join in activities and outings.

Safety, reassurance and staff presence
Although assisted living residents retain more independence than in a traditional care home, safety and reassurance remain central to the model. The service is being designed so that:

  • Staff are present on site throughout the day and night
  • Each room or unit includes an emergency call system, allowing residents to request help at any time
  • The building incorporates non‑slip flooring, appropriate lighting, secure entry arrangements and fire safety systems
  • Regular well‑being checks can be carried out in a way that is unobtrusive and respectful of privacy

Our intention is that residents and families know help is available whenever it is needed, without residents feeling observed or controlled.

Regulatory status and next steps
Karuna Care London’s assisted living service is currently in development and is not yet operational. We will only begin to offer assisted living placements once all necessary regulatory approvals have been obtained. This includes registration with the Care Quality Commission for the relevant regulated activity.

We are working with advisers and regulators to ensure that, by the time the first residents move in, the assisted living service is safe, well governed and aligned with current adult social care standards. As registration progresses, we will update this page and, once the service has been inspected, publish our CQC details and ratings openly.
